Well let me assure you there is nothing crazy about this car. The new Ford Focus Ecoboost 1.0 is a tiny 3 cylinder petrol engine that will soon replace the standard Focus 1.6 model.
But don’t be fooled this is no ordinary tiny 1 litre car, the engineers at Ford have included a turbocharger that helps produce the same 123bhp that is seen in Ford’s most powerful non-turbo 1.6.
Even with the inclusion of a turbocharger in the Ecoboost, the CO2 emissions and fuel economy has improved by more than 20% giving you up to 58.9 mpg. And Ford says that with the Ecoboost engine being much lighter, this provides more space under the bonnet for crash protection and also helps the car’s weight distribution.
The Ford Focus Ecoboost is the quietest engine in the entire Focus range, and comes with a 6 speed gearbox. There is also an untuned 99bhp model available that offers even better fuel consumption.
The Ford Focus Ecoboost engine will be available in Ireland by the end of the year. There is expected to be a premium of approximately €1,000 on the cost of the 1.6 model, but with less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions this is still excellent value for money.
